Statistics Lesson

We were learning to understand the statistical enquiry cycle. We discussed about the different aspects of this procedure - Purpose, Planning, Data, Analysis and Conclusion (PPDAC).

Six groups looked into the books in the Learning Centre and followed the statistical enquiry cycle. Each group was assigned five to six shelves. For the purpose of our investigation we had to ask a question and find out what are the variables. Our plan included collecting our data using a tally. We organised our data through the information we collected. For analysis we used graphs to make sense of the data. Our conclusion answered our questions with reasons based on our analysis.

Finally the different groups presented their work to the class.

How many less picture books are there than chapter books? We found out that there were 33 less picture books than there are picture books.

Which has the least authors in each of the six shelves? The second shelf has less number of authors.

How many are chapter books? There are 35 chapter books out of 160 books.

How many books are in each shelf and which has the most books? Shelf 2 has the most books.

How many books have faces on the cover? Fifty- three books have faces on the cover, others have none or have things on the cover.

How many are chapter, knowledge and children- themed? There are more children's books than any other types of books.

Aaron Orangi - New Zealand Olympic Ambassador - Four-Man Bobsleigh

We had an exciting and inspiring visit from Aaron Orangi, who qualified as one of five bobsleigh racers for the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy in 2006. He lives in Darfield and owns Darfield pharmacy where he works as pharmacist. In 2013, Aaron was named a New Zealand Olympic Ambassador for the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

Aaron gave us an introduction of of his life until he began competing in bobsleigh in his early 30's.

He explained the Olympic flag.

He showed us a few scenes from the movie "Cool Running" and the gear he used for bobsleigh or tobogganing such as the high-tech helmet with visors, bodysuit, synthetic shoes with spikes, leather gloves and special singlet ideal for the very cold condition.

This is a bobsled made up of of fiberglass, the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

We sure had a lot of fun on the bobsled. We were grateful for Aaron's wonderful visit.

As part of the programme, Room 5 had an exciting and awesome morning yesterday. We had a Tape Art Workshop.

With Struan, Erica's husband they showed us on the projector the amazing example of the work they exhibited in Hamilton and in other parts in New Zealand.

They demonstrated how to use the skills or techniques in twisting, cutting or stripping the tapes without using the scissors.
